Peeking into Division 10: Shapes are Everywhere!

For the month of December we looked at shapes in our environment. We started with a review of 2-D shapes and ways to describe them using the words sides and points. We learned that 2-D shapes are flat. Mrs. Betts challenged us to find different objects that were shaped like a square, a triangle, a rectangle, an oval, and a circle. We had lots of fun finding things in the class that fit this criteria. We then took pictures of the objects and learned how to use Skitch to label our objects!

Next we started to look at 3-D shapes. We learned to use the words faces, edges and vertices to describe cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders, spheres and pyramids. We played seek and find to locate objects in our environment that resembled these shapes. Mrs. Betts would ask, "What is shaped like a _____ in our environment" and we would try to name as many things as we could that resembled that shape. We could name a lot of things! We made Christmas decorations shaped like a cube, a cone, a cylinder and a rectangular prism.

We practiced drawing 3-D shapes on our iPad using the app Show Me.

Our final challenge was to make a snowman with play dough using the following shapes - sphere, cube, cone, rectangular prism and cylinder. We then took pictures of our creation, imported them into Skitch and labelled them. Our final step was to post them on our blog. Unfortunately, we ran out of time so many of us didn't get them posted on our individual blogs. Here are some pictures of our finished creations and us working on putting them on our blog. Mrs. Betts was very impressed with how quickly we could go through the process of doing this and how helpful we were to each other when we ran into a problem. We are getting very good at showing our learning using our iPads!
